- Music Theory * First-year and second-year core classes: Fundamentals, species counterpoint (in 2 and 3 parts), principles of four-part harmony (diatonic and chromatic harmonies such as mixture, Neapolitan 6th, and augmented 6th chords. * Compositional techniques of the twentieth century (post-tonal and atonal) * Renaissance polyphony
- Analysis Examination of common musical structures through a study of formal and voice-leading analysis (Schenkerian). Aural Skills Sight-singing and dictation courses for first-, seond-, and third-year students. The materials for the courses progress from simple diatonic melodies through chromatic and then to atonal melodies. Dictation with single-line melody, two-part and three-part counterpoints, and four-part harmonic progressions. Keyboard Skills (Keyboard Harmony and Score Reading) Realization of eighteenth-century style figured bass and principles of continuo playing at the keyboard, improvisation with modulation and variations, and playing excerpts from full score (orchestral and chamber music) at the piano—includes transpositions and reading of various clefs.
